You just clean the contact surface of the cartridge with a Q-tip and
alchohol.
I would not place the cartridge underwater. It will damage the
cartridge and render it unusable.

Do you submerge the whole cartridge under water or just the contact 
surface.  I could put it in a pot and weigh it down with something, 
to keep it submerged.
