If it was just the explorer shell crashing I would suggest an errant context menu handler. You can edit the registry to disable the right click context menu handlers. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers A crash of windows itself seems a bit too extreme though. It suggests severe corruption of the file system. Do you get a blue screen error? Any reference to the filesystem device drivers (like ntfs.sys?).
