PL] I and running by drive of a powered hub. After reading your post I have plugged in the second cable. However, even with a single cable, I have had no problems. Like you, I do not want to take chances.

It's for more power - see the thread I started about the my friends cute little case. It only has one and won't work with a USB1.1 port unless he uses a powered hub.
