When I had similar delays it was being caused by the file indexing service.
MyComputer/Properties allows you to turn the service on/off for each
drive/folder.
Perhaps a defrag might be a help too - I use Diskeeper from Executive
Software International Inc.
Can be set to keep things defragged on a regular automatic basis.
