I go to Win-XP Control Panel in the "old" view, (Icons), and click on: Java Plug-in. In the Java(TM) Plug-in Control Panel, click on the "Update" tab. On that tab are "less than" a dozen settings you can use to control exactly what you want to happen (and when) with the Sun Java.
