There are simple adapters available which will connect usb to ide directly, but the problem will probably be getting power for the drive. Usually usb won't provide enough power for the drive and an external power supply is needed.

have to drag that along with me. Is there any kind of simple adapter or
plug that I can just plug into the back of the hard drive where the pins
are and the other end just be a USB connector. I just want to toss the
drive in my bag with the adapter and be good to go and am not worried
about damaging the drive or running it bare like that.
