Yes, but the penalty for having a charge to your checking account 
rejected is a *BUNCH* more onerous than just having a charge refused 
because you hit your credit limit....  [I think some of the merchants 
around here charge $40 for checks returned for NSF].... when I hit my 
Discover limit a few weeks back, the downside was exactly zero: I just 
used a different card until my payment to discover cleared...
