Get a drive cloning program from the supplier of the USB connected drive

or get a free one via google & TuCows etc.

Depending on the software you use, you may have to set the booting partition on
the drive before you copy the partitions from your
original drive

Decision to make - do you want the USB drive to be an exact clone - or do you
want to use it as a 'live' bootable backup OS

If it's a backup you want, and you are not directly cloning the old drive to
the new one
then you may prefer to have a small booting OS partition that just contains
recovery programs, then a clean, activated OS and
drivers version of the OS, and/or one with your major (daily use) applications
and utilities, and finally - a copy of your actual -
daily use system and setup

Finally - it may be a good time to adjust your OS partition size - DL DVD usage
means that you (depending on the software you use)
may want to ensure the OS partition has at least 10Gb free for working space -
for when you get a new drive.

Subject: Easiest, fool-proof way for a fool to create a backup clone :)

While I'm joking about the fool part... what is the easiest way for a non
technical person to create a cloned drive (on USB) that
they can swap out to boot if their drive fails?

My friend with the USB drive that won't work without editing the registry
(which we haven't tried yet - it works just fine with a
powered hub) wants to use the second drive as a clone that he can just swap
out. I use True image, but I'm not cloning so that I can
just swap disks, I need to restore the image.
