Arie's command of "netsh winsock reset" fixed the problem. I suspect the original damage was done by some spyware she had gotten into the system. Spybot S&D and MS Antispyware each got rid of a bunch of stuff and both now show the system clean. I will try to keep those updated. The firewall thing was the last problem.

Removal of spyware can mess up the Winsock stack, which Arie's command fixes. Windows Firewall also uses the Winsock stack.
