That happens when you use the default installation folders for several
applications from the same major software companies like M$ who like to
default to their ego, i.e. Microsoft Office, Microsoft Publisher, Microsoft
Encarta, etc. Then (if installed in the order above) the 8.3 folder name is
Micros~1, ~2, ~3 depending on which was installed first, second & third.
Then if you use xcopy(32) to copy to another hard drive, it may copy
Microsoft Publisher folder first and the Office folder second which would
make Publisher ~1 and Office ~2 in the example above.

This still is not a problem unless there is a pointer in the reg file and/or
an ini file that uses the 8.3 name. If you search these files for folders
with the ~, you most likely will not find any reference to a ??????~x
folder. I never have.

Another work around is to create the folders manually in order of their ~x
and then they will be the same as the original hard drive folders. Or do as
I do, always change the default install folder by removing any reference to
the company, e.g. Microsoft or at least change it to MSabc, then Office
becomes MS Office or Msoffi~1 and Publisher becomes MS Publisher or
Mspubl~1.
