I'm not so sure about that. AFAIK, you can enter an airport without showing
an ID, nobody stands at the door looking at ID cards as you enter. To
actually use your plane ticket, and - I think - to get through the security
screening, you have to show an ID. But not just to enter the building.

I've ridden the Amtrak Autotrain several times, and I  don't remember having
to show an ID. I'm not positive about that, either. BTW, I can say without
the slightest doubt that getting to the Autotrain station and onto the train
is *much* simpler and less stressful than boarding an airplane.

Security in federal buildings has indeed headed toward the paranoia zone in
the last few years. Just going into the room immediately inside the front
door in the IRS building on North Capitol Street to get tax forms you have
to detour through the metal detector and show ID.
