I am trying to help a friend who's laptop boots to a black screen. The operating system is Windows 2000. The boot sequence appears normal until you key the password. After keying the password the screen goes black. Pressing ctl-alt-del brings up the Windows Security box and you can shut down normally. Seems like it has got to be something simple. I have also booted to safe mode with the same results. Anyone how to get the desktop back?

One could set the desktop to show no icons & have a black background so are you sure it's the screen that goes black or is it the desktop that goes black ?
