It doesnt appear to be using the PATH variable....

If you open a CMD prompt, and THEN type 'winrar' I get:-

'winrar' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

However, it works just fine directly from the Run box. The same holds true for winzip, AcroRd32.

I've got a feeling that they use Name Space in the Registry. If one types in the Run box "My Documents" they get not the relocated Name Space for My Documents but rather the original My Documents for that user even tho the Name Space has been redirected.

Only programs in the PATH variable can be run from the full CMD prompt, like notepad.

I suppose it's remnants of DOS .

One further thing, if I manually navigate to a directory containing a zip file via CMD, and then just type the name of the zipfile then Winzip opens, despite it not being able to be called correctly.

That last part is because of the file association.
