I performed an XP repair and it still will not install.
I am stumped.

Have any of you ran into difficulty in doing a Repair install using a Windows CD that is not as up to date as the Windows on the computer that you are attempting to repair?

Examples:

You are using a Windows CD without Service Pack 1 slipstreamed to repair Windows that has Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2 onboard.

You are using a Windows CD with Service Pack 1 slipstreamed to repair Windows that has Service Pack 2 onboard.

Not only in Windows XP have I encountered problems with Repair or overlay installs from an older Windows CD, I have encountered the same with Windows 98, 98SE or Me. I have a comprehensive updater CD from Microsoft I use after I install Windows 9x. It's name is, Microsoft Windows Security Update CD, February, 2004. That CD boosts me to over half way. I finish off by downloading the updates available at the Microsoft Windows Update site.

When you do a clean install, you have a good Windows base from which to update from. I, of course always use a Windows XP CD that has Service Pack 2 slipstreamed for all of my installs. Often the customer's CD has only Service Pack 1 or no service pack slipstreamed. Using the customer's Product Key this has worked well for me on clean installs.

Back to repair installs. If the Windows CD you are using has the latest service pack slipstreamed, you should encounter no problems related to this issue.
