I'm thinking that if ZA is catching this thing calling out or at least
trying to then you are already infected.

I was thinking about that... that was my guess, too: that ZA does its thing
a bit "too late" in the TCP food chain so that the RAS connection sees the
traffic before ZA dumps it...  I'll try switching to the windows firewall
and see ... thanks!
