with Sony and Plextor being in the lead because they seem to promise

That's just plain WRONG. There is no DVD-R DL media & so what if there were
there are almost no stand alone players that will play this stuff. One of
my venders that does sell the DVD+R DL media strongly urges that one NOT
buy it if one is expecting to use it for video play back in a stand alone
player.
I had also considered the Toshiba External USB 2.0 Slimline DVD SuperMulti
Drive because a friend has a pioneer dvr and this drive seems to promise
that I would be able to share DVD-RAM disks with him. However, I don't
necessarily want to give up the DVD-R DL option for him if it is
definitely something worth having.
Unless you know that you have a stand alone DVD player that plays DVD-R DL
disks that don't even exist yet then I certainly wouldn't worry about that
option. I have an external Pioneer DVR-107 & an internal DVR-108. IIRC the
108 is the only one that will burn DL disks & I haven't even tried one yet
because I know my stand alone players can't handle it. For all the
technical info that you could want & then some go to
<http://www.videohelp.com/>.
Can anybody suggest a better model from these vendors or possibly another
vendor that I should also consider? Also, does anyone have an opinion on
the relative merits of DVD-R DL? It seems that other than lacking this
feature and a slight bump in price; the Toshiba would also be a viable
competitor. I appreciate any thoughts anyone cares to share. TIA.
Pioneer has been making them the longest & as far as I'm concerned they're
the best. Heck even Sony included them in their laptops until Sony started
making their own. You can get a 109 at Mwave.com for as little as $59 plus
S&H. OBTW afaik Pioneer is compatible with more brands of blanks than any
other & Ritek 8x disks routinely burn at 12x with no problem & if you want
to upgrade the firmware you can push the 8x Riteks to burn at 16x saving
you tons of loot. The difference you can send this way if you're so
inclined. ;-)
