Depends on your contract - most free phones are on 1 yr contracts so after
the contract has run out the phone is yours to do what you want with - I
just sold an unlocked tri band Nokia business phone 6310i for $160 (equiv)
went on ebay within 40 mins.

I'll send you the software but can't guarantee it'll work on a US phone
although it should.

Yes - if unlocked you have the choice of operator or even operators and you
can get dual sim card holders that switch operator/card on each re-start.
So switch off - switch on = vodaphone UK sw-off sw-on = AT&T USA or
whatever......
