Hello Bill -

I too still run Win Me on a machine. I had it on my main machine from the
time it came out until I installed Win XP beta 1 and then 2 on it. I now
have fully up to date Win XP Pro on all machines EXCEPT my wife's. Hers is
a Dell Dimension that came with Me factory installed and it has been totally
trouble free except for when I installed Norton Internet Security 2004 on it
in the fall of 2003. (That POS just about destroyed 3 of our machines but
uninstalling it was the solution to that.)

I have found Me to be extremely stable on her machine as well as on mine
when I was using it. It very rarely requires a reboot, and I have found it
much easier to network than any flavor of 95/98 was. No comparison, IMO,
with Win XP but my lady is one of those who believes I shouldn't fix
something if it isn't broke. Her machine, her decision.

I have half a dozen legal copies of Win 95 and 98 laying around here, as
well as the copy of Me I initially bought for my own my own machine. If I
had a machine that wouldn't run Win XP, I would for sure put the Win Me on
it in preference to 98.

Of course, differences of opinion are what makes horse races, and this is
just mine. ;)

Subject: Re: [WINHOME] Which is more stable Win98, SE or ME?

I don't want to start a fight, but if anyone does have to deal with a pc
with ME on it:

There are of course other issues with ME that can cause problems (just like
there are with 98 / 98SE), but I found the main problems some time ago were
PCHealth and TaskMonitor. Remove these from the start up list in msconfig,
they are not needed, and from System Tools Scheduled Tasks, delete the
icons for PCHealth and Tune-UP applications (msconfig is your friend, remove
anything from the startup list that is not needed as well.)

I use ME, build 4.90.3000, on one old pc on my network, it runs happily and
is seldom turned off or needs to be rebooted, so don't discount the os out
of hand, the interface is nicer than 98 runs any software I need and it
boots a bit quicker too.
