Hi All,

Over a month ago, I got all excited about video capture and "box
reduction" project. So I picked up a Plextor TV402 gadget. It's a
USB2 connected hardware encoder with a built in TV tuner.

All public reviews were great and it seemed you could not go wrong,
but get one and finally convert my VCR tapes to some form of
compressed video.

Euphoria of a new toy quickly passed, when I realized that between
poor S/W tools and overglamorized advert literature, the thing is not
all that great. The encoding, while hardware based is OK, when done
at high resolution, but at higher compression, it plain sucks. The
audio is only MP2 with the tools supplied. Additional work, or money
to do MP3.

If you want good video compression, you're better off with a software
2-pass method done by your CPU - not the one in a Plextor box.
