Folks I am looking for an adaptor that plugs into a motherboard ide connector (or a 68pin scsi connector) and gives me a female usb2 plug on the other end. It should do all the necessary electronic translation so that I can plug in a usb2 (or 1.1) hard drive or cd/dvd rom/rw.
Anyone seen anything like this? Google searches have turned up close items but not quite the right thing. Before anyone asks, here are the reasons why (from questions on other lists) With the appropriate translation electronics, it should be possible to covert either way. As to why, several reasons: 1) I have a limited amount of room in my tool bag for equipment, so I carry a slimline dvd/cdrw with me, it's in an external addonics case that allows me to use usb2 or firewire or pcmcia. I do have an adaptor that would allow me to plug a slimline drive into a standard ide cable, however that would mean carrying around 2 slimline drives, one in the external case and one bare. As it stands now, my regular backpack load weighs 50lbs, some days it hit's 60+, so weight is of a huge concern. Full sized drives are also not an option due to size. I use the APC Travelpower backpack which has limited space. As an aside, the travel power adaptor is pretty suite as it has a usb port built in and a usb splitter cable so that you can charge your usb devices while charging your laptop. I have usb charging cables for both my ipaq and my cell phone, with the adaptor working with air, auto and a/c, it offers a LOT of flexibility and weight and parts reductions. But I digress.... I also carry a usb2/firewire laptop harddrive in this enclosure http://www.snt.com.tw/product.php?mode=show&cid=20&pid=102 Again same thing applies as above, I have an adaptor for the 2.5" drive to plug into a regular ide cable, however that would mean dismantling the enclosure or carrying 2 drives. Being able to plus a usb2 device directly into an ide connector saves me having to dismantle the enclosures or carry duplicates. Also, in an emergency situation, sometimes plugging in a usb2 pci card is not an option: older machine without the requisite pci2.1 support, server or desktop with no free slots etc, or lastly a machine that will only boot from an onboard ide device. I generally prefer to do a full image backup of a system before working on it. That way if anything goes wrong, I have fall back position, hence the reason I carry the cdrw and hard drive.
