Hope you haven't all gone away for the weekend... (but if you have, have a
good time!)
Starting yesterday I've had persistent trouble connecting to the internet
through our wireless network.
Ken has a desktop computer with a DSL modem and a linksys router. I have a
Dell laptop with their wireless card and adapter. Both of us are running XP
pro. The system has been working fine for two years. Nothing has changed
on his computer or mine.
Yesterday I couldn't connect to the internet. At first it seemed that the
problem was speed. It would take five or six minutes to load a page. Eudora
could often get through OK, but not browsers, and I tried several. Ken was
connected and not having any trouble. What would happen is that either I'd
get the "this page cannot be displayed message," or the browser would keep
trying and keep trying, but there would be no activity on the
two-little-computer icons in the tray. Sometimes the browser window would
read "done," but show a blank screen. At those times, sometimes when I
click on "stop" the window would show properly, but sometimes it wouldn't.
The browser couldn't even back up properly. It's like the browser can't
open the page, even when it's already in its cache. The meter showed very
good strength. Sometimes the speed is very low. Usually I have both good
speed and good strength. The fact that Eudora could get through made me
think it might in fact be a speed problem.
But there's very little activity even when the speed and signal strength
are listed as good. It's like the browser doesn't know where to look.
Now here is the especially weird thing. When I take my laptop to Ken's
room, it seems to be able to connect. And then it continues to work for a
while when I remove it to another room. So I don't see how it can be a
consistent problem with signal strength. It's more like Ken's computer
resets it in some way that doesn't endure.
We can't imagine what has changed. We upgraded the firmware for the
router, and that improved things some, but not enough. We tried a range
extender, but that didn't help at all.
Any ideas gratefully received.
Best,
-- Eve
