I have seen the other answers and here is (may be) another
way to do the same thing.

He shouldn't need anything except the DSL microfilter.

So when the phone rings and he picks it up and finds that
it's a fax machine, what should he do? :-)
Or worse, he's not home and his answering machine answers
the incoming fax call?
He needs a FAX machine that "listens" to the line and "kicks in"
WITHOUT BEING TOUCHED in any way. I have one that
must be 10 years old that does that, so it is not a new feature...
They called it something like call discrimination(?). The FAX
machine needs to be set properly for this feature.
If I hear a FAX tone coming in when I pick up any phone, I just
wait for the reply FAX tones from my own machine and then hang up...
It is all "transparent" if I'm there. (At least I do not have to do too much...)
A feature the answering machine needs is that when "anything"
picks up, it "stops" answering that call...
The FAX machine will bump the voice answering machine off
the line when it determines a FAX is coming in, assuming I am
not there, just like the answering machine will yield the line if I
pick up late -- that cancels the recording too...
This is all dependant on the features built into you particular
equipment, and as such -- there is no one answer other than
to get the "right stuff" with the proper features...
Good luck, and I hope you/they have the features you need in
the stuff you/they already have...
