Another strange problem. One of the staff members
here has a Kingmax 128 usb flash disk.
Are we talking a USB thumb [aka Pen] drive or are we talking a Compact
Flash disk that one might use in a camera or pda or notebooks PCMCIA adapter?
If he uses it at home he can access the files -
but sees nothing when he uses it at work. The home xp
system has been formatted to FAT I think, and the
staff xp's have been formatted to NTFS. Dont know
what the flash disk was formatted to (or even if
it has been formatted).
XP can read both NTFS & FAT so that shouldn't be an issue. Have you been
able to get the staff's machine to read any flash disks ?
He says that at home the flashdisk is designated
E: AND F:. How is this possible if he has not
partitioned it. He doesnt know enough to
partition it. Could it be done automatically?
Yes & no. It depends. If he has an external USB flash disk reader with 2
slots then each slot takes a drive letter. I have a external Dazzle flash
disk reader & it does take 2 drive letters.
I have advised him to copy all stuff off at home
which he has done. What do we do to make this
flashdisk usable both on FAT and NTFS? Why doesnt
my flashdisk behave in this fashion as I also
have FAT at home?
When you talk about partitioning then it sounds like you're talking about
thumb or pen drives which normal needs no adapter to plug into a computer's
USB port. If that's the case then it shouldn't need 2 drive letters
normally in his machine at home. Have you plugged in other USB devices to
see if the USB port is working properly ? Both devices that I've talked
about usually come pre-formatted & it's usually not an issue on any Xp machine.
I vaguely remember that there was a USB update for XP a few years back as
USB 2.0 wasn't ready when Xp came out like Firewire was. Could it be that
one of these machines has had all the updates applied ? Could it be that
one of these machines has Tweakui installed & they turned off access to
those removable drives ?
