You need to place the /PAE at the end of both lines in your boot.ini file like this:

No you do NOT. Where do you get your information? The [operating systems] is a header & nothing else goes on that line.

You need to master the basics <http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;289022> then the advanced <http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;833721>. No where in these supporting articles does MSFT claim that you need the /PAE on any other lines. The only time he would is if he were dual booting & then it would be on a line below [operating systems] like the one that begins with multi(0) Nvidia graphics cards do NOT support the /PAE <http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;283296> & therefore will not support 4g. Some machines may need the switch /3G as well if I'm reading the Knowledge Base correctly. If he does use the /3G he needs to include a blank space before the /

The modified boot.ini reads;
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]  /PAE
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect  /PAE

A space must be placed before the /PAE

I've already stated the last line twice. Thank You.
