Yes that should work pretty well for Windows XP.  

After further checking...

With Windows 2000, I'm going to try: TrayManager, v2.0 from 
PC Magazine Utilities  (not quite freeware anymore, but I've 
got a copy).  It should give more flexibility than even the 
Win XP icon hiding feature.
