agreed, sounds like long vs short filenames, look in folder options -
filetypes for .doc etc and make sure they read:
"c:\program files\microsoft office\winword.exe" "%1"
the quotes around %1 allow windows to read the long filename
For "Open", the "Application" is
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE" /n
The "DDE Message" is
[REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen("%1")]
