Just a little update on this and thanks to those who offered advice.

A Seagate Momentus 40GB 2.5" hdd came along at a very good price, bigger and 
faster spin speed than the original so I was a little doubtful, but in it 
went. I was even more surprised using the HP discs to install the os and the 
drivers all went without a hitch and never even asked for the serial no for 
XP. A very different experience to the troubles I've had with things HP 
previously. The owner reports it works better than when it was brand new so 
they are happy too.
