HP put a hidden boot sector on the Hdd as do Compaq and this can cause many problem when Hdds are formatted. Have you got a restore CD? Can you get the My Documents stuff onto another drive or backed up somewhere? If you are going to go the whole hog then save the data first. Then COMPLAIN strongly to the service director (top dog) not his/her minions about the seeminly crap advice you got froma nobody.
