I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Video Card with both VGA and DVI connectors.
I connected matching type monitors to each card output.
I found that through the advanced Display settings in the Control Panel I can switch live between each monitor, (VGA / FPD), however both will not operate at the same time. One can also set up a Hot Key - 'Alt+F5' to switch between monitors.
They operate like control buttons, when one has focus the other does not.
This card loads both type display drivers on startup so their is no default unless there is only one Monitor connected and that becomes the default regardless if is the analog or the digital.

Can't recall who originally asked the question, however, hope this helps with the answer.

I understand that is the case with dvi-d, but hopefully with dvi-i once
an analogue (vga) display is detected, the dvi port switches to dvi-i
(digital) output only, let's hope gainward or sparkle respond or I'll
simply buy a 256mb pci card ;)
