If the public access was a secure net, you could not use it :-))  It's that
way by design.  Of course the stuff Verizon advertises for money I'm sure
needs a user/pass.

Measure/estimate the thickness of your walls in a straight line from your
laptop to the router, it may give you an idea.
It's 40 inches.
