MS Antispyware never ceased to detect Gator. It still detects it and
displays it in the list of things found. The only change was it doesn't set
the default action to "remove".

Another possibility for the reason MS is dragging their feet on the final
release could be the passage or not of antispyware legislation in
Washington. If a product violates the law, it would make it easy for MS to
defend its removal of software with the product. Conversely, if the law is
poorly written, it would make it difficult to defend the product.

Excellent point for thought. I run Counterspy, the "commercial" version, as
it were, of the MS "beta". I have found it to be more thorough and feel more

secure than with the MS product itself, for which there does indeed seem to
be some evidence that it has been watered down a bit in response to
arguments from spyware/adware vendors. Certainly the MS product at one point

(and maybe still) ceased to detect Claria, formerly known as "Gator". Having

been Gatored in the past, and having wasted much of a day unGatoring the
machine, an antispyware application that doesn't detect it would be useless
for me.
