Ah.. of course.. I should've done that first: if I boot to the bios I can 
see if the BIOS sees the device: if so, I know I have somewindows 
problem; if not, then there's a hardware problem [as you suggest, 
probably a plug has worked loose].  If the latter, I'll try opening the 
case to see what's what...

THANKS!  At least I have a rational plan of action now...
