That's twice in as many weeks that I hear about WINS - so, there's
still things to learn in this existence!
I got the files I wanted, but I'll look into this.
If you have a 98 machine on a LAN with XP machines the best thing you
can do is to use WINS. Many LANs will function ok without the use of
WINS but just having one 98 machine on a LAN can severely slow down
the network unless you do. You could put the ip addies of the XP
machines in the lmhost file on the 98 machine instead but I prefer to
use WINS instead as it is faster. With WINS the 98 machine only looks
for those specific addies. In the old days ;-) some of us added
Netbeui or IPX/SPX so as to get the proper Netbios transmittal across
the LAN but that actually added noise to the network & as I had
pointed out to me in smaller LANs it may not even be noticeable but
in larger networks in can become quite a headache therefore I always
use WINS on 98 machines in a mixed network. Also in the old days I
would have trouble connecting PC to PC for temp connections via
Windows & would resort to using pcAnywhere until I discovered that by
adding IPX/SPX the problem went away as it was surely a pain to have
to install pcAnywhere just to transfer a few files.
Glad everything worked out for you.
The end of this week we Americans will be celebrating Thanksgiving so
things on the list may get a little quite but never fear some of will
be lurking. ;-)
