Often times after the restore of a backup image, the re-created partition is not set active, and that prevents booting.
There is nothing in Windows XP's anti-piracy provisions that would keep you from changing the hard drive. I have restored many times for customers. I found that as long as I restore to the original hard drive that Windows XP was installed on, it will boot. When I restore to a different hard drive (a new hard drive being used to upgrade the old hard drive or replace an inoperative old hard drive) often it will not boot. It seems that Microsoft has anti piracy measures built in and those measures view a different host hard drive as a different computer. I say the following with the fact that I feel limited to the hard drive I can successfully restore to and have boot, the original hard drive (or the one Windows XP was running on before the need to restore came up.) I may eventually try the image thing and use a customer's computer as a guinea pig. I will have my routine Ghost copy also, in case I need it. The customer's computer becomes a guinea pig only if they need a format job anyway. I would not mess up a workable computer. Here is why I will not use my personal computer for this image thing. I do make Acronis images from time to time, in addition to my Ghost copies. I will never run a restore on my personal computer on a trial basis to see if it will work. If I did it would be copied to another hard drive, not the one I currently use. Problem there is restores to another hard drive often do not boot. Knock on wood. I and my wife (our 2 computers) have been over 3 years without a format job. I am a power user. She is not. Like the Eveready bunny, we want to keep going and going for 3 more years. Format jobs are no fun! I have some customers who have went for years without a format job and others continually mess up their Windows. If Windows XP can live up to the punishment I put it through, it is a very tough and stable operating system!
