From their (1&1s) point of view, it makes perfect sense to re-new it...
It costs them next to nothing to renew, and if it was "available again",
they have lost most of the leverage they have against your friend...
I would work with the people at the 1&1 800 number to try to
resolve it inside "this country" more.
I am glad you brought this up on the list since I could be easily
in the same "boat" if my account is linked to a bad or expired
address or an address they close for me due to some billing fault...
IIRC, they recommend on the sign-up page to NOT do what your
friend did, so they already know it "can" be a problem later... <grin>...
Getting back to "my" part of this thread...
E-Rice hosting, and not getting copies of my posts, etc...
(I think that was the problem...)
E-Rice was very nice about everything and refunded my hosting fee
since I was complaining about certain incompatibatilities from "day two?"
The only problem was, I paid with PayPal with a CC, and when the
refund came through, PAYPAL stored it away for me in my "PAYPAL
Account" and I never knew it came... PayPal did not refund it to my CC.
I inquired about "no refund" at E-Rice, and they replied promptly
with full documentation. It is a shame their e-mail hosting service did not
work out...
There seems to be no way for me to put the credit back to my CC, and
when I sent the money to my bank account I was warned it might cause
my bank to charge me... I saw a recent similar (but different) type of
money transfer cost $12.50 for someone else, at a different bank...)

I was expecting her domain to become availabe soon and we were going to try
to get it back - but the idiots renewed it - her account is currently "in
collection" and they don't have a valid credit card on file.
