InFocus (the projector maker) uses some unique technology to produce a 61"
(!) HD DLP television that is less than 7" deep. It's not as thin as a
plasma, but it can still be wall mounted easily. The picture with a HD
signal is absolutely gorgeous. And with DLP, when the bulb burns out, you
just replace it. Pay attention to woot.com. They've been offering them
every 5 or 6 weeks for $2,500 with $5 shipping. A plasma that big would run
thousands more.

I have no idea how long they last, but £4000 certainly seems steep to me.

Circuit City currently has the Philips 42" Plasma HDTV (42PF7320A) on sale
for $2280 (note that price is in DOLLARS, not pounds). This is also a 42"
TV, not 40. They also offer 24 months of interest-free financing on it...

They have a variety of sets at this size for slightly more. E.g., Panasonic
42" Plasma HDTV (TH-42PX50U) for $2850 with the same type of financing.

Aside from that, 2 or 3 times per month Circuit City runs a deal with 10%
off select merchandise over $199 when one links in through MSN. I don't know
if these particular items are eligible for that or not.

I am aware that the UK may have radically different pricing, but these
prices (and sometimes significantly lower ones) are readily available from
several vendors here in the US. I figure by mid-2006, 42" HDTV pricing will
be well under $2000, and same size EDTV will be under $1K (I have already
seen the latter at that price if one can work a "deal." Don't know of any
right now.)
