Well it seems you completed the research you asked the list to do for you
:-).

I can't see the Staples page without a Canadian zip code.

Assuming the Staples link gave the Sony make/model as DRX-810UL, then it
would seem they have the wrong description on their website.  Somebody at
Staples grabbed the description of an internal drive and then added a line
"external drive" at the end.

Of course, had you posted the Sony model info earlier I'd have been able to
come up with a more accurate response earlier.

I was looking at a Staples Canada web site http://tinyurl.com/8z946 . The
accompanying photo and descriptor says "external" thus my question.

However, when I travelled to the Sony web site http://tinyurl.com/cxxs5 I
found
more information: "Dual Interfaces -- Connect via USB 2.0 or i.LINK
(FireWire/IEEE1394 compatible). Includes 4pin and 6pin i.LINK ports"

It looks like this is an external drive with USB 2 capability. :-)
