Does the troubled machine have its AV program configured to check outgoing mail? If so, you might try turning that option off
and see if that makes a difference.

They both have AVG.

Just because both machines have AV doesn't mean one of the two
couldn't have its check-outgoing-mail-for-virus function corrupted.
