I have the Netgear WGR614v1 (v1 - firmware version 1) which is the first
version of the router. I had had no problems with this router except for a
slight ss hickcup which required me to reboot the router.

As you pointed out to using the WGR614 for the advantage of powering down
When the wireless AP is no longer in use I don't see why not here.

Subject: Netgear WGR614 wireless router

Does anyone here have any experience with this router? I bought
one because I've had no problems with my RP614 and the price was
right. From the reviews on the web, it seems some people are
having problems.

I haven't set mine up yet, it is supposed to be a Christmas
surprise for the girlfriend so she can wander around the house
with her laptop.

Should I use it to replace the RP614 or connect it to the RP614
as an access point? I can see a possible advantage to that in
allowing the wireless to be powered down when it's not being
used.
