If auto update is turned on and set to download and install updates
automatically, it will do so whether the admin account is running or
not; only high priority or critical updates are installed in this
mode. Auto update runs as a system service with the required privileges.

What I do is just "run as" Internet Explorer and then do "windows update"
from there [out of my limited acct, of course].
I used to do that, too. But after one of the version changes to the
updates site (I forget which, or maybe is was after SP2) this method
no longer worked for me. I now have to actually log into the admin
account to install updates. I can still use this method to check to
see if there are updates, but if I try to install them, it always
errors out. I'm curious as to why you can still do it, Bernie, but I
can't. I'm using XP Home, perhaps that has something to do with
it. Home does have a lot of quirks.
