manufacturers utility to tell the drive to run in PIO or DMA33 mode, modes above dma33 require the 80pin cable, which is what you will have inside your pc and is likely why the drive works fine there.

On the Plextor manual it's said that a jumper on the back is for DMA setting. It says: DMA jumper: Use the DMA jumper to convert between UltraDMA Mode 0-2 (no jumper, default) and Multiword DMA Mode 0-2 (with jumper installed). In general, leave this jumper at its factory setting, which is Ultra DMA (that is, no jumper installed).

Should I install the jumper?

Last minute just before sending mail:

I installed on that enclosure an old Plextor cdrw, a Plexwriter 2410
and it's recognized immediately. The problem to be solved is with the new Plextor DVD itself.

I think this proves that your new Plextor requires and 8 wire cable and your enclosure has only 40 wires inside it.
Open up your enclosure and count the wires on the short cable inside.
The 40 wires are sort of fat.
The 80 wires are really fine or small.
