While they are basically the same size and shape, CD's and DVD's usually
need different laser's to read and write them, so it could be that the laser
emitter, collector, or some of the electronics particular to the CD laser
has/have 'died'

Another 'test' you could try is, if the device has a volume control, and
headphone socket on the front, then you could see if you can hear a music CD

Guessing that it would cost about 10.00 to return it to the
manufacturer/supplier if it's under warrantee, I would suggest that at less
than 35.00 for a DL DVD & CD recorder, it's a better option to just replace
the device rather than trying to get the device checked, and fixed
