If you buy a Canon IP 5000 printer (possibly their other printers have a
similar driver) the driver incorporates a "print to fit" utility.

However, as I don't use the photo printer for such mundane tripe I end up
with the same problem as you do!

Sorry it's no help but then you might be looking for a new printer and this
might give you a nudge in the right direction.
