Hi, all --

Here's something weird.

I have four anti-spyware programs on my computer. Spybot and Adaware I run periodically. SpySweeper and Counterspy I run every day. I get sent all kinds of crazy stuff by my clients, so I worry about this quite a lot.

A couple of days ago I got a notification that I had about a million viruses of the "malformed archive" type in my Temp folder. McAfee couldn't clean them, quarantine them, or delete them. I deleted the entire contents of the Temp folder and that seemed to be OK. But since then, my Counterspy is not finding any spyware cookies. SpyBot and AdAware find them, but they were not loaded when the computer was exposed to the viruses. SpySweeper now does, after I turned off the Hosts File shield to pret it again. But Counterspy, which used to find the most of all, isn't finding anything.

Furthermore, one of the things that SpyBot found was this listing in the registry:

Windows Security Center.AntiVirusDisableNotify and then its registry setting and Windows Security Center.FirewallDisableNotify and then its registry setting.

So I think that something has disabled some of my anti-spy stuff. But I don't know what to do about it. I've looked at all the settings, and they all seem to be OK. Spybot says that it repaired this disable notices. I've tried googling, but I'm not having much success, probably because I don't know what I'm looking for.

And Counterspy still isn't finding anything.

Anyone have any ideas? What I'd like best is a site that really explains this. I found a super one about host files, but I haven't found anything good about this.

Best,

-- Eve
