Ouch! That's expensive alright! It also depends on how much data storage your HD
unit has also. I do know that Ontrack charges by degree of damage according to
their
self made recovery fesibility study, amount of storage and cost in Ontrack's
manhours
to recover the data.
Believe me when Ontrack charges that much depending again on how much data
maybe lost and damage
to access, the recovery process can take anywhere between 24 hours to a few
days or a month of manhours
just to recover from a fire, earthquake or flood damage.
Anything very minor like deleted files are very easy to recover. 20/20 did a
story on E-waste and it said that most people think that when they delete or
format a HD unit the data's gone but not so its still there and very intact.
Anyone with a good set of data recovery utilities like Ontracks suite for
instance, can restore the data nearly %75 if not %100 of the time if the HD is
still in pristine shape. Its just that the OS removes the file pointer chain
from the FAT, marks the sectors as deallocated and just hides the filename from
view and places a $ in front of the file name to indicate that the file is no
longer given storage space or in reality simply marked as a file that's been
deallocated for storage in the FAT with its sector pointers removed from the
file.
