Hopefully those on the list will have more knowledge and hands-on
experience - such as with the XpPe and other 'recovery' system CD/DVDs
If they can run a windows XP environment from the CD/DVD , then hopefully,
it shouldn't be too difficult to setup a 98 version
Oh but it is besides one could boot to dos with 98se & clean viruses
from fat32 systems from the command line therefore the need wasn't as
great as it is with XP on NTFS. Buying NTFSDOS Pro just to be able to
cleanup systems wasn't feasible for us small timers.
The biggest problem with trying to boot a XpPe CD or DVD on a 98
machine is whether or not the machine has enough memory. I've had
several conversations with some list members about trying to get the
memory requirements lower. I have mine create a ram drive as well but
that could easily be sacrificed to using temp space on a HD but then
the temp would need to be deleted on shutdown or bootup. As I see it,
running an virtual environment on a 98 machine can be problematic if
the machine doesn't have enough memory also. If one wanted to they
could use BartPE for machines with lower memory requirements as well.
I have a couple of lower memory builds that I use with a ramdisk but
here again that could be scrapped to go even lower. The easy way to
tell if one doesn't have enough memory when booting either XpPe or
BartPe is there won't be a start menu. FWIW one can use external USB
or Firewire drives as well with my XpPe compilation but I don't
recall if that's possible with a Plain Jane BartPe or not.
With my XpPe compilations I've been using Open Office 1.1 with
excellent results as it can handle most MSFT Office documents. I've
not found a round2it for the new version of OO 2.0 tho. ;-) FWIW
some are using their own XpPe compilation as a bootable OS from CDs &
DVDs because it is inherently more secure by it's very nature having
visitors upload their data to a remote server & not letting them have
any access to their secure networks.
