There is some software that will try to recover a drive by looking for
entries that look like partition control entries, and then looks for
NTFS/FAT(32) directory and allocation tables etc.

Google should locate it for you

I don't remember if it has a trial (not paid for the product) mode that
would indicate if the drive contents can be recovered, but if you are
willing to pay for the product it may be worth the effort.

if i knew how to use linux, i might try... most of the boot utilties i have
use a variant of linux and can't read the bad partition though.

it's really about the best tool for the job anyway - for my day to day work,
that's windows hands down. :)
