Its certainly possible.  The 10metre band can display some remarkable 
long distance communication.  I must admit that a lot of this kind of 
long distance propagation seems to be very dependant upon the sun spot 
cycle, about 11 years from peak to trough.

My particular interest has been VHF & UHF communication.  I have a 
couple of confirmed contacts with Japan on 144MHz.  The furtherest 
terrestial confirmed contact is Sicily, and the furtherest UHF 
confirmed contact is White Russia.

Alas the Internet has very much taken over nowadays.  Certainly in the 
UK, Ham radio seems to very much in decline.  I haven't been on the air 
for several years now.
