No catch. I was just showing that an inexpensive DVD burner will be dual
layer. In fact, I haven't seen a single layer burner advertised for
awhile now. Even the cheap burners that I'll never buy are all being
listed as dual layer. I guess the point I was making was that dual layer
does not mean more expensive than single layer.
From what I understand, the only real difference between a single layer
and dual layer burner is the firmware; the laser is identical. So, a
dual layer DVD burner costs about the same price as a comparable single
layer burner. Even if you want a top-of-the-line burner, you won't pay
extra for dual layer.
Of course, you could say there's a catch when it comes to the price of
the media. The blanks are still relatively expensive.
