Just don't try the microsoft.com ping. It won't work. :) I'd suggest
finding a few external IP addresses that work when your connection is
working normally. Just ping a few servers, see if they respond, and, if
so, write their IP addresses down.

That's part of what the Repair option does for your LAN. It also clears
your DNS caches and does a few other things that I can't recall right
now.

Since that's your own machine, it never goes through the NIC, so it's
not too surprising that it works.
